Full Description
In the summer of 1951 four trenches were dug outside the Quenin Gate in Lady Wootton's Green by the Canterbury Excavation Committee. The site code was CXXB.
Only in trench 1 was excavation continued below the thick Medieval levels and here four Roman inhumations and a cremation burial were found. These were evidently from a cemetery just outside the town adjoining the road leading to Richborough. There was very little evidence for Saxon occupation in the area, contrary to expectation.
The inhumations consisted of 2 males, one of fairly large stature whilst the other two were unsexed. The cremation burial had been inserted into the grave cut of the second inhumation and consisted of two vessels, the one containing the cremation being tightly packed with burnt flints. The cremation vessel was a beaker dating to 120-200 AD. The accompanying vessel belonged to the first half of the second century, both lay 30cm above the earlier skeleton.
Above the Roman layers was found several layers with sparse Saxon pottery fragments as well as a Medieval cobbled surface and a fallen flint wall, possibly connected to the nearby monastery.
