Full Description
In April 1957 a segmented trench was dug by the Canterbury Excavation Committee on the site of the current 1 Marlowe Arcade. Evidence of a building of Roman date was seen with a brown occupation earth, post hole, loam floor and the remains of an oven. A cobble floor was also revealed, possibly belonging to the 1st century timber building, it was covered with a thick occupation layer which contained Samian sherds. This was overlain by a collapsed clay wall containing a pot dated to c. 60-75 AD, probably the time when the building went out of use.
