Monument record TR 15 NE 1538 - Roman Occupation, 11 St George's Lane

Summary

Part of a Roman floor was found immediately beneath the concrete floor of the cellar. It consisted of a thin gravel layer containing tile fragments and bone. A Roman pit was also discovered, containing pottery sherds. On the south side of the pit it had been cut by a recent vaulted structure which crossed the trench.

Full Description

In summer 1947 two trenches were dug by The Canterbury Excavation Committee on the site and slightly to the south of 11 St George's Street.
The site was coded CX K I and II, K being a cellar.
The excavation of trench II was quickly abandoned. In trench I part of a Roman floor was found immediately beneath the concrete floor of the cellar. It consisted of a thin gravel layer containing tile fragments and bone. A Roman pit was also discovered, containing pottery sherds. On the south side of the pit it had been cut by a recent vaulted structure which crossed the trench.
