In December 1947 and January 1948 The Canterbury Excavation Committee dug two trenches on the site of the current 9 St George's Street. The trenches were coded C XI N, I and II and were dug in a cellar between the National Provincial and Barclays Banks.
Trench I was dug in the lower, west part of the cellar and little of archaeological interest was found except for three Roman pits. All other levels and features in the trench were post Medieval.
Trench II was dug in the east part of the cellar where more stratigraphy was preserved. The earliest feature was mid first century through which had been dug a Roman pit, yielded pre-Flavian Samian. The pit was joined to a possibly drainage gully.
Parts of two successive Roman timber building were found, but the cellar was too small for coherent plans to be recovered. A wall was represented by several post holes and a slot dug into the brickearth. This had been later replaced by a square cut gully.
