Full Description
In October 1981 the Canterbury Junior Archaeological Society and Canterbury Archaeological Trust undertook an excavation in the back garden of 3 Queen's Avenue (now the garden of 27 Whitehall Bridge Road). This location was chosen because of the proximity to Roman Watling Street some 30m to the south and was prompted by the finding of a number of tegulae during the installation of a garden path.
The earliest feature, only partially located in the excavated area and at a depth of 0.65m below the present ground surface, was a well-metalled, single phase Roman lane/track. This had a shallow side gutter, aligned NNW to SSE. A few sherds of late first and second century pottery were recovered from the road gutter and the lane metalling.
The alignment of this track is at variance with the line of Roman Watling Street, but it may be a small track laid to service an industrial suburb of the Roman town.
The Roman levels were sealed by deposits 0.3m thick of 'turned over' brickearth, which probably accumulated from the late Medieval period, when this area was part of the pasture of Westgate Court Farm. Associated with agricultural activity and probably pre-dating the mid-nineteenth century were two field drains and a roughly paved and wheel rutted track. These late farm features and the 'plough-siol' were sealed by a layer 0.15m thick of garden loam.
