Full Description
In April 1949 The Canterbury Excavation Committee dug a single trench within a cellar on the south side of Burgate Street, just east of Iron Bar Lane. The only feature found was a Roman pit; this was filled with dark sticky material above which was a deposit of yellow loam. Within the dark sticky material was pottery and a coin. Two more coins were found in the yellow loam. To the south of the pit was fund a deposit of loam mixed with plaster and concrete containing a Roman coin dating to 395-408AD. This is thought to be debris from a nearby Roman building.
