Summary

Two successive late Saxon floors were found overlying remains of a Roman timber building consisting of a sleeper beam trench and a gravel floor. The natural brickearth was seen to lie at a level of c. 12 OD and was sealed by a layer of loamy soil containing small chalk lumps and Belgic sherds; and interpreted as pre-Roman plough soil.

Full Description

In summer 1949 a small trench was dug in the cellar immediately north of Loyn's Bakery, on the east side of Canterbury Lane, by the Canterbury Excavation Committee. The trench was coded CXV N.
The trench was dug in order to test for the edge of an EW street found in a previous excavation in 1947 (CXH). Two successive late Saxon floors were found overlying remains of a Roman timber building consisting of a sleeper beam trench and a gravel floor. The natural brickearth was seen to lie at a level of c. 12 OD and was sealed by a layer of loamy soil containing small chalk lumps and Belgic sherds; and interpreted as pre-Roman plough soil.
