Monument record TR 15 NW 2153 - Roman structures, Tannery Allotments

Summary

Three phases of a Roman structure were identified. The first of these was timber framed with clay walls and was built in the last quarter of the 1st century. The second structure had dwarf masonry walls and, probably, clay upper walls coated with painted plaster. By the mid second century this had given way to a masonry building to the NW of a large courtyard.

Full Description

Between July and September 1987 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated within allotments adjacent to St Mildred's Tannery and the sitecode was TAN87.
Three phases of a Roman structure were identified. The first of these was timber framed with clay walls and was built in the last quarter of the 1st century. It had been destroyed by fire. The second structure had dwarf masonry walls and, probably, clay upper walls coated with painted plaster. By the mid second century this had given way to a masonry building to the NW of a large courtyard. The main, SE facing wall was heavily buttressed and flanked within by a double range of rooms with substantially raised floor levels. Ground radar indicated that the structure may have continued NE as far as far as Roman Watling Street. The building underwent several successive alterations, including the reversal of an internal drain. The building was abandoned by the fourth century, perhaps due to a rising water table, and the site was probably not reoccupied until going over to cultivation in the fifteenth century.
