Full Description

Between January and June 1994 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated in the Duck Lane Car Park prior to the cnstrcution of housing on the site. The work followed an evaluation in the previous year and the sitecode was DL94/DLA94.

The excavation area was located at the north end of the site against the Duck Lane frontage and measured 15m by 11m. The earliest deposits and features encountered at a depth of 1.8m beneath the ground surface were of Roman date. These were deposits of agricultural loam and areas of gravel metalling together with its and gullies which cut into the natural subsoil. Early Medieval features and deposits were also present, the most significan being a large ditch, apparently a man made water course. This perhaps part of the city's drainage system.
