Full Description

In October 1999 the Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated outside the grounds of St John's Hospital, Northgate after the cutting of a service trench revealed a well preserved sequence of Medieval and post-Medieval floors and walls. The sitecode was SJH99.

The initial pit measured 2.10m square and was 2.95m deep and was located 1.5m from the north west kerb outside the St John' Hospital entrance. Although there was much disturbance from pre-existing services, an impressive sequence of road surfaces survived, particularly in the south-eastern face of the cutting, overlying grey natural clays. A gravel filled hollow, from about 2.10 to 1.70m below the modern surface, just entered within the south western half of this face and may have represented Roman road metallings within a flanking ditch or hollow way. Above this lay several cobbled and gravel surfaces three of which, at about 1m, 0.45m and 1.3m below the current road, appeared to contain crushed mortar.
