Full Description

Between 1976-1978, H. Woods excavated on the south side of the Abbey Church of St Augustine's.
Post-Dissolution ground build-up with an average depth of 20cm covered the remians of two structures within the excavation area. One was a chapel, located facing the sixth bay of the nave west of the crossing. Juxtaposed to the chapel was a rectangular building opposite the seventh and eighth bays. To the west of this was a large buttress.
Roman remains indicated that this area had been used as an extra-mural rubbish dump. A single Roman burial was also uncovered with an EW alignment.
