Summary
The excavation revealed Roman pits and cremation burials as well as traces of timber and masonry structures. Anglo-Saxon buildings and thoroughfares were discovered as were remains of the Medieval Friary church and associated burials, roads and buildings and pits.

Full Description
In 2001 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated on a site to the south of St George's Street near its terminus at St George's Gate. The work was undertaken prior to the redevelopment of the site as a shopping complex and was funded by Land Securities Plc., the developers. The excavation revealed Roman pits and cremation burials as well as traces of timber and masonry structures. Anglo-Saxon buildings and thoroughfares were discovered as were remains of the Medieval Friary church and associated burials, roads and buildings and pits.
