Full Description

Andrews states this of the Wincheap Roman Cemetery, 'Wincheap Cemetery is described by the Victoria County History (vol. III) as the largest in Canterbury covering some 35 acres, stretching from the present multi-storey car park, through Wincheap (including Martyrs Field) to Hollow Lane. At least three mound burials are recorded in this area at Dane John and adjacent to it. In addition Roman burials are known from Castle Street, the Castle itself, Wincheap Green and roadway adjacent, Station Road East, Pin Hill, under the railway, Wall Field, etc.' Others have been found since Andrews Survey.

Archaeological evaluation in 2003 found two complete Roman vessels and a possible juvenile inhumation. Human bones associated with the vessels included a fibia and a shaft. The remains are thought to belong to an infant of around 18 months, and were therefore unable to be sexed. Animal remains were also associated with the burial.
The pottery vessels were positioned in close proximity, one on its side, the other leaning upright against it. One of the vessels has been dated to the around the late 2nd - early 3rd century AD, and is thought to be an Upchurch Type beaker. The other vessel is described as "a double handled vessel of unusual form" (from the original report, 3).
It is unclear whether the vessels were part of the inhumation burial or represent a separate cremation burial at the site.
Roman pottery was recovered from the layer above the burial(s). (3)
