Full Description

Roman metalled surface observed in a hole dug for a stanchion in the cellar of 11, High Street in c.1968. The pit was located beneath the south undercroft of the building. Also seen were the construction trench of the medieval building and 13th-14th century pottery fragments. A dark earth deposit was also observed overlying the Roman levels. (1)

During an evaluation in 1992, a Roman surface was identified at the site. This comprised Roman brick, clay, tile, and gravel layers. This layer was compacted and formed a yard or courtyard surface which has been interpreted as high status due to the character of the layer (a 0.6m deep banded gravel without trample layers, suggesting a "well constructed and maintained" (2) surface). The metalled surface has been interpreted as a courtyard surface dating from the Roman period.

A Roman wall was associated with the gravel layer, and was thought to form part of the architecture of the forum. Successive courtyard surfaces were associated with this feature, and a drainage channel was identified nearby.

In one area of the site, this layer was overlain by a possible occupation layer comprising bone and oyster fragments within sandy loam. Above this, a layer of sandy loam with bone, oyster shell, brick, and tile was identified, thought to represent a period of abandonment at the end of Roman occupation in Canterbury. This layer was followed by a levelling deposit containing the same material, alongside large quantities of building materials.

In another area of the site, mortar floors had been laid across the gravel surface. These were accompanied by a hearth. As these layers were not fully excavated, it is unclear whether these features date from the Roman or the post-Roman periods. (2)
