Monument record TR 15 NW 2184 - Roman Geological Evidence, St. Mildred's Church area

Summary

The site was located approximately 12 m from the NE angle of the church itself. At a depth of 5ft Roman levels were encountered and below this was found a small quantity of Belgic pottery. The high water table meant that a number of pits visble at this level were unexcavated.

Full Description

Between February and May 1951 an excavation, directed by Frank Jenkins, investigated a large area east of Church Lane, St Mildreds prior to the extension of the Canterbury Gas Works.

The site was located approximately 12 m from the NE angle of the church itself. At a depth of 5ft Roman levels were encountered and below this was found a small quantity of Belgic pottery. The high water table meant that a number of pits visble at this level were unexcavated but were evidently dug from a higher level than that reached. Overlying the Roman levels was a build up of 5ft of mixed soil containing pottery ranging in date from 13th-18th century.
The excavator noted that Roman levels were waterlogged, an indication of post-Roman submergence of the land surface.
