Full Description
An excavation was undertaken in Summer 1952 on a stone structure first noticed by Frank Jenkins. The building was located in old gravel workings in Old Park along the Sturry Road about 1.5 miles NE of Canterbury.
A single trench, coded C XXII OP, measuring c. 5m by c. 1.2m was excavated on the SW side of the structure. A wall 3ft. 6in thick was found built of gravel and flints set in mortar. The foundation was set in a trench backfilled with gravel. The structure possessed a loam floor disproving an original supposition that its function had been one of water retention. The function and exact date of the building remains unknown and no documentary evidence exists regarding a structure at this location. Three fragments of curved course brick similar to those found roofing a tile kiln in Yorkshire. The structure was probably erected in the mid 14th century as pottery sherds of this date were found in the floor and beneath it.
