Full Description
In 1954, during the digging of a trench for the foundations of the boundary wall and gateway for the rear entrance of the post office garage in Victoria Row, Northgate, two flint built walls forming a right angle were discovered. The quoins were of caen stone and in the angle was a diamond shaped base presumably for a pilaster made of the same stone. On the south and east sides of the structure was a floor once paved with square glazed tiles, both plain and inlaid. Those which were still in situ were well worn and it was evident that they had been laid at random for they did not form any specific design. Several tiles of the same type were found in the soil overlying the floor, as also two fragments of architectural mouldings of Caen stone painted bright red. The remains were thought to have been from St Gregory's Priory.
