Full Description
In the summer of 1951 four trenches were dug outside the Quenin Gate in Lady Wootton's Green by the Canterbury Excavation Committee. The site code was CXXB. A Medieval cobbled surface and a fallen flint wall, possibly connected to the nearby monastery were revealed.
In Trench II, two successive Medieval buildings were observed with several burnt loam hearths. Several pits cut into the Medieval layers and later a building with brick walls and a brick floor was erected on the site.
In Trench III there was a similar sequence of Medieval building to that found within the previous trench and finds included a bone flute and pottery dating to the 12-13th century.
In Trench IV an incomplete excavation (curtailed due to bad weather) revealed a pit dating to the 11th century, sealed by a chalk floor, bounded by stake holes. This lay beneath a layer of black, charcoaly soil which in turn was overlain by a succesion of Medieval occupation levels and floors, no contemporary walls were found.
