Full Description
In the Summer of 1947 The Canterbury Excavation Committee dug a small trench against the outer face of the city wall in the cattle market 40m south of the south kerb of St George's Street. The site was coded CX CW.
The original city wall had been destroyed at this point and was replaced by a brick wall. The top c 91cm of the trench proved to be 18th century or later in date.
Several Medieval layers were found, the most significant being a very black irony layer c. 5cm thick which contained coal and 14th century sherds. There was a small hollow in this in which a crucible was found: metal working may have taken place in the area. Below the black deposit was a layer of brown earth, 7.6cm thick, beneath which was a hard well-trodden flat surface made up of large flints and gravel: this was possibly a floor connected with the metal-working. The putative floor overlay some dirty brownish clay with gravel and large flints in which the rim of a hand-made Saxon cooking pot was found. Of possible Roman date was a thin mortar spread which extended under the wall c. 30cm below the modern concrete footings and which overlay a deposit of yellow clay beneath which was a layer of gravel. No pottery was recovered from these levels.
