Full Description
In Summer 1953 the Canterbury excavation Committee excavated five trenches within and immediately outside Canterbury Castle. The site was coded CXXIV Castle and the trenches numbered I-V.
Where excavation extended below Medieval levels, ie in trench II, the first occupation on the site was found to be of late-second to third century, but no obvious structures were found. The Saxon period is represented only by rubbish pits, but in the immediately pre-Castle period a thick occupation layer accumulated and several more pits were dug. The Castle was probably built at a date between c. 1100 and 1125, and wall footings, walls and two floors of its basement were examined. By the late thirteenth to fourteenth century the building was falling into decay.
