Full Description
Two trenches were excavated at separate points on St. Peter's Lane. Roman Levels in Trench I were found to be sealed by a possible burnt medieval floor overlain by thick occupation levels. This was covered by thick occupation levels. These deposits were cut by a very large pit containing 13th and 14th century pottery which may have been dug to bury demolition deposits. These deposits were sealed by a floor, black loam and modern deposits.
Trench II had a complex sequence of medieval levels. Overlying waterlogged latest Roman levels was a thick layer of black mud , probably deposited in the medieval period to raise the levels of the ground above flood levels. A single medieval pit cut this deposit and both were sealed by a loam floor which yeilded 14th century material. Later structures were found overlying this.
