Full Description
In the summer of 1952 a trench, coded C XXII K, was dug on the site of 53 King Street. A sucession of floors, occupation-levels and pits of Roman, Medieval and post-Medieval were discovered. The trench was divided by NE to SW brick partition, 15cm wide, and to the NW of this strip 46cm wide was left unexcavated.
Evidence included a Roman building with at least two phases of occupation and traces of possible iron production. Occupation of the site was shown to be continuous from the mid second century to some point in the fourth; and thereafter occupation resumed from late Saxon to modern times.
The Roman floor had been cut by a large medieval pit (Pit 3) containing pottery dated to the second half of the thirteenth century, a deposit of black loam was found to seal the floor and medieval pit 3, this contained pottery of a similar date. Other pits also of medieval date were revealed and excavated.
