Full Description
During reconstruction of collapsed revetment on the east bank of the River Stour enabled observation of the archaeology of this river bank. The site was located to the rear of the former GPO premises. The greatest depth reached was 1.98m and reached the bed of the 12th century channel. Finds included 12th century course and 13th century glazed pottery, an iron flesh hook, fragments of shoe leather, a prick spur and a snaffle bit. The virtual absence of Roman debris throughout the excavated area at this level is remarkable, and can only be explained if it is assumed that the river has changed its course.
