Full Description

In April 1947 The Canterbury Excavation Committee dug two trenches on the site of 26, St George's Street coded CIX B. In Trench I, apart from a robbed wall nothing Roman was found; and Medieval layers, which dated from the 14th century, lay directly above the natural subsoil, indicating that there had been a cellar at that period. The robber trench yielded early 19th century glass bottle fragments; but it aligned with the south wall of a Roman apsed house found further east (found in 1949). Just NE of the robber trench the base of a Medieval EW flint, 61cm wide, was located. This was taken to be a boundary wall belonging to the Austin Friary.
In Trench II, which lay c. 18.3m south, a disturbed human skeleton probably from the Friary cemetery was found sealed by 17th and 18th century levels.
