Full Description

During the late 14th century, c. 1378, with the threat of possible invasion during the Hundred Years' War with France, the City had to rebuild and drastically repair the City walls which had been in existance since Roman times and had fallen into serious disrepair, or in even largely robbed. The stretch of wall between Northgate and Westgate had been largely rebuilt between 1380 and 1390 and was financed partly from murage grants bestowed on the City by the Crown and partly by money from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Simon of Sudbury. The 'Long Wall' Survey of c. 1402, shows the City virtually completely re-walled at that time, except for a short stretch by the river Stour between Northgate and Westgate. West Gate had been built by c. 1380. Part of this stretch of wall were demolished along with Northgate between the second half of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
