Full Description
The original city wall built by the Romans in c. AD 270, had by the 13th century fallen into a bad state of disrepair and in places actually robbed away. During the 100 Years War with France serious fears of invasion saw the rebuilding and repair of the city's defensive walls. These works were undertaken largely between c. 1391-1411 and mostly completed by 1402. This included the section between the former Riding agte and St. George's Gate. Further work of repairs to this section were undertaken c. 1472-1494. The wall and towers in the vicinity of the Bus Station were completely rebuilt after the Second World War.
