Full Description
Medieval Tower 8 (Zoar Chapel Tower) is semicircular in shape and has been built against the city wall, was constructed in c. 1391 at a time when the City Walls, of Roman origin, were being substantially rebuilt and repaired due to a threat of invasion by the French during the Hundred Years War. The tower, at a later date after the demoiltion of St. George's Gate to the south in 1801, was adapted to house a reservoir for the city's water supply. In 1845 Strict Baptists founded a chapel (Zoar Chapel) on the top of the tower, and remains and is used as such today.
