Full Description
In 1862 the 'Ettrick Forest Mill' (named after a family estate in Scotland) was constructed at the site for Sir William Napier. The site was suitable for its prooximity to water and wharfs. There was a substantial expansion to the south prior to 1897 by which time the mills were known as 'Creek Mills'. By 1909 the site was known as 'Daily Telegraph Paper Mills'. In 1933 England's first greaseproof paper mill was built to the south. The site was expanded to the north in the 1950s following a fire at the Priory Tannery. This was known as 'Dartford No. 6' and was still standing in 2009. By the late 20th century the mills had ceased operation. The Greaseproof Mill was demolished in 1984 and further buildings demolished in the early 2000s.(1)
