Landscape record TQ 83 NW 14 - Sissinghurst Castle Gardens

Summary

20th century gardens created by Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson on a run down site near Cranbrook in the 1930s. It was opened to the public in 1938. The gardens are set in the grounds of an Elizabethan mansion which was formerly the site of a Medieval stone manor. There are 10 separate gardens with profuse and varied planting contained in distinct formal areas. There is also a moat and a statue of Dionysus. Summary from record TQ 83 NW 97: Mid C20 formal garden, created on a medieval moated site, with surviving built features of the C16 and with adjacent land which formed part of a C16 park and which was planted with parkland trees in the C19.
