Full Description
Criene Mill is a medieval or earlier watermill situated across the river Stour on Binnewith Island, on the site of the later Greyfriars monastery by St. Peter's Grove. The mill is mentioned in early documents for example: it is recorded as crienemelle in a papal bull of Pope Alexander III dated 1179; also the mill is mentioned in a rental dated c. 1180 as Crinemelle in the parish of St. Peter. It is also listed in the modest rent roll of some 30 properties in Canterbury belonging to St. Gregory's Priory, who thus appears to own it, as Crienemeldne on the river Stour. This is where the Greyfriars built the monastic house in the 13th century and it would appear that the mill had become disused or even demolished by that time.
