Monument record TR 15 NW 2276 - Wincheap -Site of Wine Market
Summary
According to Urry the name Wincheap, possibly an ancient wine-market, can be taken back to the beginning of the 13th century. The earliest instance given by Wallenberg (Kent Place Names) is of 1226, he suggests an origin 'wain-market' (waegn + ceap). Brent states 'there was a market at Wincheap where wine was sold'.
