Landscape record TR 05 SE 46 - Chilham Castle

Summary

Landscape park and formal and ornamental gardens at Chilham Castle. The park has its origins as a Medieval deer park and was landscaped and enlarged by James Colebrook in 1724. Further alterations took place in 1777 when Lancelot Brown was commissioned by James Wildman for improvements, however, the extent of his work is uncertain. Further additions were made after 1867 by Charles Stewart Hardy. The formal and ornamental gardens were laid out during the early 17th century by John Tradescant the Elder for Sir Dudley Digges. Some of the garden terraces which had been removed by Lancelot Brown were reinstated by James Beckford Wildman between 1816 and 1861. A restoration of the gardens was carried out from 1918 by Sir Herbert Baker for Sir Edmund Davis.
