Summary

According to Somner, in c. 1400, possibly earlier, the medieval Meat market or 'Flesh Shambles' was held in Butchery Lane. Urry also notes that a 'Flesh Shambles' is mentioned in a document dated to the twelfth century as being located in the SW corner of the Buttermarket.
