Full Description

In 1983-1984 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust examined and recorded elements of a building comprising 8-9 The Parade and 25-26 St Margaret's Street. The building is of Medieval date and is double jettied. Evidence for original partitioning at bay intervals indicates a 'row' or 'lodgings' development. Shop renovation and some structural in the uppermost storey afforded access to the uppermost storey. The crown-post roofs intersect and originally terminated in gables, (a feature not regarded as local in the Medieval period) only one of whch survives, to the parade. Window details were recorded together with evidence for a moulded midrail. A fine in situ 17th century garret door, fossilized in a later partition, was also drawn.

This structure represents a group of late medieval lodgings that are situated on the north-east corner fo St. Margaret's Street (Nos 25-26) and The Pardade (Nos 8-9). This building is a double jettied structure, with an L-shaped plan, which contains the remains of many medieval lodgings. To the north it originally faced St. Andrew's Church which sttod in the centre of The Parade, it was removed in 1763, but the lodging building remains
