Full Description

The remains of a medieval timber building, walls, floor, and outshot were identified though archaeological evaluation in 1989. The building is thought to have been of single-bay depth and to have included an outshot to the rear of the structure. Clay flooring and hearths in several phases were also identified through excavation. The hearths were constructed of peg-tiles in a bed of clay.
A masonry foundation thought to be for a dwarf wall supporting the timber frame of the building comprised of chalk lumps and flint was also identified at the site.
The room fronting onto the road has been interpreted as a possible hall of a "small Wealden-type strcuture set long axis onto the street" (from the original report, 1). The outshot has been interpreted as 15th century due to associated finds of pottery.
Other features may have been associated with this structure including a rammed chalk floor and possible dwarf wall aligned parallel with the building.
Later finds at the site include 17th century flooring and pits, with later post-medieval and modern modifications to the house. (1)
