Landscape record TQ 85 SE 122 - Chilston park gardens

Summary

Landscape park and formal gardens to Chilston Park. The park was enclosed during the early 18th century by John Hamilton with tree planting dating from after 1719, and further improvements made by Thomas Best after 1736. Planting throughout the park took place throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. It is planted with scattered trees with woodland on the southwest borders, surviving features include a double tree avenue and ponds. The formal gardens were laid out by 1709 and partly replaced with a simpler design by 1802. Alterations also date to the late 19th century
