Monument record TQ 83 SE 22 - Tenterden medieval borough

Summary

Tenterden is mentioned in 1449 as being incorporated, therefore included on record as a medieval borough. Little archaeological work has been undertaken in the town and only one medieval jug has been found; this was dated on the basis of its decoration to c. 1250-1300. There is no mention of Tenterden in the Domesday Book of 1086. However, the encroachment of a number of shops or temporary stalls onto the high street, probably to the south of the church, suggests that there was an informal market in Tenterden in the late 13th century. By the fifteenth century a market place had been extended along the axis of the High Street. The earliest elements of the present church also date to the thirteenth century. Tenterden was incorporated into the Cinque Ports in 1449 and it was around this time that the court hall was built in the High Street by the corner of Coombs Lane, opposite the market hall. There were also at least four inns at Tenterden during the medieval period, all situated along the High Street.
