Full Description

Cropmark of rectangular enclosed settlement with no entrance or internal features sited to TQ 6768 7160 from good quality air photographs. Interpreted as Roman. (1)

The cropmarks of this possibly Roman rectangular enclosure can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1977. This enclosure, whose internal dimensions are 39m by 35m was seen to the north of Harts Hill is situated at TQ 6767 7160. The south-eastern side of this enclosure is defined by a ditch that extends north-eastwards for circa 113m before heading north-west for circa 100m and presumably functioned as a boundary ditch. This boundary ditch was originally recorded separately in NMR 765326. The cropmarks of other ditches to the west and south-west represent routeways and further boundaries. These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(2)
