Full Description
[TR 000 700 approx.] Danish Overwintering Place (1) Quite early in the ninth century the raiders were wintering in the temporary bases on such islands as Noirmoutier in the mouth of the Loire or Sheppey in the Thames estuary. The little that is known about Viking encampments supports the argument that their armies were small. At first, Viking bases in England, as elsewhere, were on islands like Sheppey and Thanet. (2)
