[TQ 5077 7206] TUMULUS [O.E.] (Site of) (1) Listed as Tumulus, not burial - also Ro. foundation. (2) The mound near the north corner of the square earthwork [see TQ 57 SW 92 for earthwork in Joyden's Wood] is now practically destroyed. It was excavated by Spurrel, who found nothing. It seems to have stood within a small uncultivated rectangle, surrounded by slight lynchets, and may have formed the site of a windmill, but there is no evidence. (3) Certainly a prominent mound, but does not look like a barrow. (4) A slight unsurveyable mutilation of the ground is visible at the site of this mound but as it occurs in a garden it is possibly not the remains of the mound. (5) The site, at the bottom of a north facing slope is not suggestive of a barrow.
