Full Description
Early medieval rubbish pits and later medieval timber buildings were excavated at Upper Bridge Street in 1986. The buildings were represented by floor levels which sealed the earlier pit features. "Layers of burnt clay, charcoal and large quantities of iron slag were observed within the building levels, and part of a possible kiln or furnace was also uncovered in the north-east corner of the site" (from the original report, 1). This has led to the interpretation of the structures are industrial buildings associated with processes such as iron working. (1)
