Full Description

In the Medieval period a large number of pits were dug in the area, destroying many of the Roman levels. Pottery from the pits largely dated to the 14th century. Post-dating most of the pits was a succession of stone buildings originally constructed in the mid to late fourteenth century. These represented a considerable expansion into the rear areas behind the frontage of Burgate Street. It was interesting to note that many of the original Medieval walls were rebuilt in the 17-18th centuries and that these rebuilds were often capped by recent footings, thus preserving the Medieval property boundaries right up to WWII.
