Full Description

A medieval embankment, wall, ovens, and buildings were excavated at Stour Street in 1986.
Roman and Anglo-Saxon layers at the site were cut by 12th century timber piles and associated wickerwork, suggesting the construction of a riverine embankment. This has been interpreted as a construction created in order to "confine the river flood plain west of the line of the present intra-mural stream" (from the original report, 1).
Masonry walls later replaced the timber embankment along the riverside. Two late medieval kitchens were constructed against these which contained large circular bread ovens.
In another area of the excavation, the remains of 13th-17th century timber buildings were excavated, with at least 6 individual buildings having been identified. (1)
