Full Description

Documentary evidence (Christchurch Priory rentals) indicated that the area of the evaluation had been occupied by buildings since at least the mid- twelfth century. A number of maps and plans of the area dating from 1595 also showed that the land was occupied by buildings; these were perhaps residential or commercial premises. Other cartographic and documentary evidence has shown that a small tannery existed in post-Medieval times in the west of the evaluation area. Trench A was positioned to locate the tannery and any associated levels.
