Monument record TR 15 NE 1718 - Lanfranc's Crypt
Summary
The excavation exposed early Medieval foundations walls probably dating to c. 1096. The western wall of the crypt was also drawn and studied and proved to be earlier in construction than the 1096 foundations and probably belonged to Lanfranc's crypt, one of the earliest in the country.

Full Description
In March 1979 Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated beneath the floor of the western crypt of Canterbuy Cathedral prior to the building of new brick piers. The bulk of the work involved exposing and cleaning early Medieval foundations walls probably dating to c. 1096. The western wall of the crypt was also drawn and studied and proved to be earlier in construction than the 1096 foundations and probably belonged to Lanfranc's crypt, one of the earliest in the country. The original central entrance to both Lanfranc's and Ernulf's crypts was uncovered havig been blocked when the great pulpitum screen above was built.
