Full Description

However, two small 'islands' of stratified Medieval floors were found in the southernmost quarter of the trench and a larger area in its base whilst stratified floors associated with a truncated wall were found in the northernmost quarter. The wall was probably of two phases. The earlier of these, of mortared chalk and flint, was probably pierced by a doorway and was probably early Medieval or Medieval in date. The later phase (which was very poorly preserved) was of mortared flint, chalk and re-used Caen and incorporated a fireplace: this was probably Medieval but may have been early post-Medieval in date. Very little of the fireplace survived, a recess in the northern face of the wall had a few traces of clay bonding, a couple of broken fragments of peg tile and a patch of scorching. A small portion of the scorched clay and peg tile base projecting into the room survived in section and a deposit of scorched clay and broken peg tile appeared to represent the collapse of the fire back, probably caused when eighteenth or nineteenth century foundations were cut into the wall.
