Summary
St George's Gate was not a Roman structure and was constructed by breaching the city wall, possibly as early as the late 9th/early 10th century. Sections of the Roman wall and rampart, built 270-90 AD, were seen during the excavation, buried under later work. Rebuilt in c.1400.
