Vertical Datum: LAT Orientation: EW 29-FEB-1940 First class echo - typical of bottomed submarine. Sharp cut-offs with tide slack, wake effect with tide running. Doppler according to the tide. Considered a wreck, lying NW/SE in 51 08 24N 001 28 18E. 01-MAR-1961 Least echosounder depth 63ft. 07-NOV-1961 Drift sweep - clear at 60ft. Least echosounder depth 68 in 88ft. 23-AUG-1962 Not swept. Least echosounder depth 72 in general depth 84ft. 09-NOV-1965 Least echosounder depth 67 in 81ft. Scour 85ft. Seabed sand. Position 51 08 22N 001 28 20E. 19-MAR-1968 Least echosounder depth 65 in general depth 81ft. Scour depth 86ft. 20-AUG-1968 Least echosounder depth 65 in general depth 78ft. Scour depth 83ft. In 51 08 22N 001 28 18E. 15-OCT-1969 Two boat drift sweep - clear at 19.8, Foul at 20.1m. general depth By echosounder 22.1m. Least echosounder depth 20m. Scour depth 26.2m. Very small wreck lying on even slope. 02-MAY-1973 Position 51 08 29N 001 28 19E. Echosounder 21.6 in general depth 25m. Scour 26m. 30-JAN-1974 Position 51 08 22N 001 28 18E, least echosounder depth 20.4 in general depth 23-25m. Scour 26.2m. 09-AUG-1974 Position 51 08 21N 001 28 19E. Least echosounder depth 20.3 In 23-25m. Scour 25.2m. 06-FEB-1976 Position 51 08 22N 001 28 18E. Least echosounder depth 19.8 in general depth 25m. 26-OCT-1977 Located in APR/MAY-1976. No other details. 25-JUL-1979 In 51 08 23N 001 28 20E. Least echosounder depth 17.8 In gen depth 20-22m. No scour. Small wreck lying E/W, length 20m. Gave no shadow on side scan sonar. 09-OCT-1980 No evidence of wreck found in identical hf6 and decca position to those quoted for previous examination. Wreck considered not to project above seabed, which now has general depth 22m. Wire sweep put through charted position within 1m of seabed - no foul. 09-APR-1981 Swept clear at 18.7m. No foul, general depth 19-20m. Good sonar but no shadow. Probably buried 28-MAY-1985 During routine sonar search. Site is series of very small contacts and apparently wreck is almost buried. 02-DEC-1988 Not found, general depth in area now 16m. Magnetic anomaly still exists. 10-OCT-1991 Not found using side scan sonar and magnetometer, general depth 20m. (1)

Wreck is believed to be U-16, that was lost in October 1939 trying to get through the Dover barrage. It was depth-charged by HMS Puffin and HMS Cayton Wyke. All 28 crew lost. (2)
