Findspot record TR 15 NW 2367 - Anglo-Saxon. Findspots. Gold

Summary

The nature of the deposits in which they were found and the late date of the coin make it less likely that they came from a late Roman jeweller's workshop.

Full Description

The deposit of 'dark earth' 453 to the south-east of the trampled surface (which produced the gold sheet fragment) is assumed to be broadly contemporary with surface 485 (which contained the gold tremissis). Since both pieces had been cut, and a fragment of jeweller's rouge was adhering to the tremissis, it is tempting to see these pieces as part of an Anglo-Saxon jeweller's raw material, intended for remelting. The nature of the deposits in which they were found and the late date of the coin make it less likely that they came from a late Roman jeweller's workshop.
