Full Description

Watching brief in 2011 at the Former Elvington Working Men's Club, Chaucer Road, Elvington. Three Trenches were excavated to 1.12m deep with the trenches 18m long and 7m wide. No archaeological features were observed in trench A and only 3 struck flint tools were observed in trench B. One large archaeological feature was observed in trench C at the north-west end of the plot. The feature measured 7.02 m long, 3.7m wide and was up to 0.7m deep within the confines of the plot but may have been considerably larger and is believed to be a quarry, 2 struck flints were found in the deposit. The flints found and the fact the pit is sealed by a brickearth horizon indicates that the pit could be of prehistoric date.(1)
